How is a member’s progress calculated in a course?

Learn how Learnybox tracks your members’ progress through a course.

This article explains how Learnybox calculates a member’s progress in a course, including how time spent on pages is tracked and why the progress percentage may sometimes decrease.

It also covers manual progress confirmation and the circumstances that may prevent progress from being recorded correctly.

How progress is calculated

Learnybox automatically calculates a member’s course progress percentage based on the number of pages they have viewed compared with the total number of pages available and accessible to them.

A page is counted when the member actually views it. When they open a page, a timer starts and continues running for as long as they remain active on that page.

Progress therefore increases when pages are actively viewed and time is spent on them, not simply when they are opened.

What pauses the timer

The timer may pause if Learnybox detects that the member is no longer active on the page.

This may happen when the member:

  • switches to another tab

  • uses another application

  • is not watching a video

  • does not move their mouse

  • does not use their keyboard

After a certain period of inactivity, the timer pauses. It resumes when the member returns to the course and becomes active on the page again.

Why progress percentage may sometimes decrease

The progress percentage also depends on the number of pages available and accessible to the member.

When you give them access to additional pages within the same course, the total number of pages they need to complete increases. Their progress percentage may therefore decrease even though they have not lost any of their previous progress.

For example, this can happen when a member belongs to one group and is later given access to another group that grants access to additional content within the same course. Learnybox then recalculates their progress based on all the pages that are now accessible to them.

Can members be asked to confirm their progress?

Yes. You can ask members to confirm their own progress. To do so, access your course's general settings

and enable the following option:
Request member progress confirmation

Remember to click Confirm changes (bottom right) to save and apply your changes.

Enabling this option will require your members to mark each viewed page as complete to confirm and record their progress.

⚠️Warning: Progress confirmation is not mandatory. If the member progress confirmation setting is enabled, any page a member does not manually mark as complete will not count toward their progress.

Special case: VPNs or blocked cookies and JavaScript

Progress tracking relies on Learnybox being able to record the time spent on course pages. If a member uses a VPN, or if cookies or JavaScript are blocked, tracking may not work correctly. In this case, the time spent on pages may not be recorded.

What this means for your learners

Learners progress through a course by accessing its pages from their course area and spending time on them.

When automatic tracking is used, Learnybox records their activity in the background.

When the member progress confirmation setting is enabled, learners must confirm their progress manually. Without consistent manual confirmation, their progress will not be properly tracked.

You now know how Learnybox calculates a member’s progress, why it may sometimes decrease, and which circumstances can prevent progress from being tracked.
