What is LearnyPay SEPA (Direct Debit) and how does it work?

Automate your customers' payments with SEPA Direct Debit.

This article explains how LearnyPay SEPA Direct Debit works, who can use it, and how to add it as a payment method to your offers.

Your customers enter their IBAN only once. Each payment is then automatically debited from their bank account, from the first payment to the last, without requiring any further action. SEPA Direct Debit can be used for one-time payments, subscriptions, installment payments, and free trial periods.

Who can use LearnyPay SEPA?

On your side

You simply need an active and validated LearnyPay account. You can offer SEPA Direct Debit even if your business is based outside the European Union.
For example, a Learnybox user based in Mauritius or Dubai can still enable this feature.

On your customers' side

Their bank account must be located within the SEPA zone. Customers whose bank account is outside the SEPA zone will need to use another payment method.

How to add SEPA Direct Debit to an offer

To add LearnyPay SEPA as a payment method:

  1. Go to Sales → Offers

  2. Select the offer you wish to configure.

  3. From your offer's main dashboard, open the Payment Methods tab.

  4. Click Add payment method to add a new payment method, or click the Edit icon for the payment method you want to modify.
    ​

  5. Select LearnyPay as the payment method.
    ​

  6. Under Payment methods to display in the form, select Select payment methods to display, then select Direct Debit (SEPA)
    ​

  7. Configure additional options as needed, then click Confirm (bottom right) to save your payment method.

How does a SEPA Direct Debit payment work?

1 – Your customer enters their bank details

At checkout, in your payment form, the customer selects direct debit, then enters:

  • their IBAN

  • their address

2 – The direct debit is initiated and the order remains pending

As soon as the form is submitted, the direct debit request is sent to the customer's bank.

The order will be created, and a transaction record will appear with a specific pending payment status: Sent – Processing

The order remains in this status while the direct debit is being processed by the bank.

Processing usually takes between 3 and 7 days, depending on the bank's processing times.

3 – The order is validated and access is granted

Once the payment has been validated in LearnyPay, the order is automatically validated in Learnybox.

The maximum amount per direct debit is €2,500 by default.

Does SEPA Direct Debit work with subscriptions and installment payments?

Yes. SEPA Direct Debit can also be used for:

  • subscriptions

  • installment payments

  • free trial periods

MangoPay sends emails to customers to notify them of upcoming direct debits, including the amount and scheduled debit date.

How to track a SEPA Direct Debit payment

  1. Go to Sales → Orders & Invoices

  2. Open the Transactions tab
    ​

  3. Locate the transaction you wish to review, then click the view icon to access the transaction details page.
    ​

You can view the details of transactions that have already been processed. If the customer has a subscription, you can also see the payment schedule from the transaction details page.

What happens in the event of a dispute?

If one of your customers disputes a SEPA Direct Debit, the dispute is automatically decided in the customer's favor and cannot be contested.

Can I use LearnyPay SEPA if my business is located outside the European Union?

Yes. You can use SEPA Direct Debit with a validated LearnyPay account even if your business is located outside the European Union.

However, your end customers must have a bank account located within the SEPA zone.

Which countries are included in the SEPA zone?

The SEPA zone is not limited to the European Union. It includes:

  • European Union countries

  • the 3 countries of the European Economic Area: Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway

  • as well as Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, and Vatican City

What is the maximum amount for a SEPA Direct Debit?

The maximum amount for a single direct debit is €2,500 by default.
